Supporting the Global Call for the Decade of Action on Road Safety

We are embarking on an innovative Road Safety Initiative at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) in Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) from 3rd to 12th December 2010.

In line with our support towards the global call for the Decade of Action 2011-2020, we are promoting and encouraging commitment towards road safety, targeting parents with children.
There will also be road safety activities for children to enhance their understanding of road safety.
These activities aim to provide our children with life saving tools which will keep them safe and alive on and near the roads while creating awareness among parents and public on road safety matters.

Below we have a sneak peek of the events and workshops we have organised and managed for our partners:

BHPetrol– a road safety awareness programme themed ‘Cerah Ceria Seperti Saya Bersama BHPetrol.’ The main objective of this project was to educate primary school students in the Sabak Bernam district that visibility plays a vital role in road safety and that it is important to be visible to all road users at all times. The glowing firefly conveys the need to always be bright and this corresponds with the BHPetrol’s bright corporate colours.

There were six road safety activities carried out during the launch that were in line with promoting visibility on the roads.

1. Stopping distance and visibility
2. 5 steps of crossing
3. Walk facing traffic
4. Physical limitation-height & size
5. Visibility – Black Box
6. Increasing visibility with reflectors

The sticking of reflective stickers to the front portion of the motorcycles represents a novel idea by BHPetrol, as compared to other organizations who previously affix all reflective materials on the back of motorcycles and vehicles.

UMW Toyota Motors Sdn Bhd – This camp was initiated by Toyota to raise road safety awareness for children. Entitled ‘Safe Routes to School,’ this camp involved children from the ‘Toyota Traffic Heroes Club’ and their parents.

The workshop was divided into outdoor and indoor activities where they learnt about safe and unsafe behaviours on the road and the importance of wearing protective gear for cyclists. Parents were also given an understanding on using safe routes to school through discussions and hands-on activities.

Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) Road Safety Seminar 2009 (Singapore) – ‘A Decade of Action’ was an outstanding success that attracted participants from around the world. The seminar achieved its objectives in sharing knowledge, bringing together partners to deliver feasible and effective road safety projects and making a difference by bringing together needs and resources.

The next Global Road Safety Partnership Road Safety Seminar 2010 will be on the 6th and 7th of November 2010 in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Wake-up to Road Safety!

April 30, 2010

Wake-up to Road Safety!

We tend to forget that road rules are set to protect us and not make our lives difficult. Malaysians continue to engage in high risk behaviour on our roads. High risk behavior has been defined as an occurrence of event with probability of harm through, reckless or irresponsible behavior on the road.

The consequences of high risk behaviour on the roads can be damaging for the driver, other road users and their families. So, it is not wrong to say that high risk drivers are insensitive and selfish human beings who do not care for anyone, not even themselves.

Road crashes can be avoided, I use the term crash and not accident because most of the time it is never an ‘accident.’ You never accidentally speed, or accidentally drink and drive or use your hand phone while driving accidentally. We have to first understand that to crash or not to crash is in our own hands.

It is time we woke-up and realise that our ‘tidak apa’ (don’t care) attitude towards road safety can be bloody and even cause death. Understanding the key factors like speeding, driving under the influence, (DUI) distractions, fatigue and not using restraints properly contribute to death on the road, is the first step towards embracing road safety. Think road safety if not for you, at least for your loved ones.

Don’t you think lives taken on roads are lives wasted?

AES-GOOD OR BAD?

April 22, 2010

AES-GOOD OR BAD?

The Automated Enforcement System or better known as AES will be installed at accident-prone areas and traffic light junctions to nab offenders. Authorities feel that if the perception of being caught is prevalent, offenders will be less likely to repeat bad road behaviour.

"You Are Being Monitored" Road SignThere are mixed reactions to the idea of being watched. Many oppose to the system, believing that their privacy is being compromised and are a little hazy on the reliability of the system and its functions.

On the positive front, there are quite a number who believe that the AES system will bring about a lot of good by instilling fear in errant motorists and this in return will make our roads much safer. They also believe that it will put a stop to corrupt practices among enforcement officers.

After hearing the pros and cons, the idea that the number of road deaths may decrease outweighs all negative points. Why would you need privacy when driving? And for the reliability issue, well it is up to the authorities to ensure that there will be no discrepancies. Don’t you think any initiative taken to curb the number of innocent people including children dying on our roads is worth our support?

What do you think?
